The Black Panther Party was founded in Oakland in 1966 by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. Nat Turner’s Rebellion in 1831 forever changed the course of our history. Malcolm X was suspended from the Nation of Islam in 1963, the moment he truly became free. They infiltrated and destroyed all three of these movements, and I can’t help but wonder what could have been. People ask why I pour rage into every piece of clothing I make. You tell me.
I’m not trying to make everyone revolutionary like me. I just want people to open their eyes. I want them to remember what could have been, to recognize how much evil has been done to us, and to understand that it still lives on today. Look around: notice how quiet so many so-called allies have become while blatant policies target people of color, while our tax dollars bomb children overseas, while our government installs puppet dictators to steal other nations’ resources and keep them poor, then tells the public those people are poor because all they do is kill each other.
It makes me think about the silent ones back then, the ones who disagreed with how our leaders were portrayed but were too afraid or too comfortable to speak up. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke about them best when he said, “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”
