During the 1960s, Black communities across the U.S. were regularly targeted with police harassment, violence, and racial profiling while the legal system looked the other way. The Black Panther Party’s police patrols were a necessary response, giving people a way to protect each other when authorities would not. By legally observing police stops with a visible presence, the Panthers challenged a system that relied on fear and silence. The patrols brought accountability into the streets and reminded the community that their rights and their dignity were worth defending.
