Knowledge of Self: Dark Chocolate

THIS COLLECTION IS A TESTAMENT TO SEEK AND OBTAIN KNOWLEDGE OF SELF

This design draws inspiration from a back tattoo concept that I had in my head for years, with the inscription “ihe omuma nke onwe,” which is Igbo for “knowledge of self.” My maternal lineage traces back to the Igbo tribe of Nigeria, where the pursuit of self-knowledge is vital. It is essential for the descendants of the diaspora, especially those of African descent in America, to embrace this understanding to fortify both mind and body.

Black Panther: The black panther in the design is a tribute to the Black Panther Party, which began in Oakland, CA. It serves as a solemn vow to our revolutionary ancestors, promising that we will stand in unity and defend our freedom.

Jaguar: The jaguar, on the other hand, I get from my paternal side. The jaguar references the Mexica (Aztec) religious story of the Fifth Sun. In this ancient tale, Nanahuatzin, the god plagued with sores and sickness, sacrificed himself by leaping into the fire, transforming into the sun that continues to shine today. His extraordinary courage inspired both an eagle and a jaguar to follow him into the flames, where the jaguar earned its distinctive spots.
